I dream of sunshine. I dream of birds chirping. I dream of a day when I can walk outside without instantly regretting my life choices. Most of all, I dream of doing fun things with my daughter—things that don’t involve being trapped indoors, wrapped in a blanket like a human burrito.
Now, don’t get me wrong—I love a cozy winter day as much as the next Midwestern mom. But by this point in the season, the novelty has worn off. The blankets have been claimed (by my daughter), the Netflix queue is empty, and if I have to scrape ice off my car one more time, I might just move to Florida out of spite.
So, in the spirit of manifesting warmer days (because at this point, it’s all we’ve got), here are the
Top 5 Things I Can’t Wait to Do with My Daughter When Spring FINALLY Arrives:
1. Take a Walk Without Wearing 17 Layers
There is something magical about that first spring walk. You step outside, feel a breeze that doesn’t threaten frostbite, and suddenly, life is beautiful again. I can’t wait to take a long walk with my daughter, breathing in fresh air instead of recycled furnace heat. Of course, she’ll probably complain that we’re “literally just walking,” but hey—at least we won’t be slipping on ice.
2. Go for Ice Cream (Without Freezing to Death)
Sure, we could eat ice cream in winter. But eating ice cream in the freezing cold just feels wrong. I want the full experience—dripping cones, sticky fingers, and the struggle of eating it before it melts all over our hands. Plus, nothing bonds a mother and daughter quite like arguing over which flavor is superior. (It’s cookies and cream, by the way. No debate.)
3. Open the Windows and Air Out the House
I love my family, but after months of winter hibernation, our house smells like people. I can’t wait for that first warm-ish day when I throw open every window, let in the crisp spring air, and pretend like I’ve suddenly got my life together. Will my daughter complain that it’s too breezy? Probably. But I’ll be too busy breathing in fresh air to care.
4. Go on a Target Run That’s Just for Fun
Winter Target trips are strictly mission-based—get in, get out, survive the parking lot. But a spring Target run? That’s different. That’s leisurely strolling through the home décor section, pretending I’m going to organize my pantry, and convincing my daughter she does not need another lip gloss. It’s a sacred experience, and I am ready for it.
5. Sit on a Patio and Soak Up the Sun
There is no greater joy than Midwest Patio Season. It’s like the whole region comes back to life. People emerge from their homes, squinting at the sun like they’ve never seen it before. I can’t wait to grab my daughter, find a cute café with outdoor seating, and just exist in the sunshine. She’ll probably spend the whole time on her phone, but hey—baby steps.
Until then, I’ll be here, bundled in my 47th hoodie, staring out the window, waiting for spring like a dog waiting for its owner to come home.
